Our values

Commitment: We believe that progressing gender equality requires drive and commitment in whatever context. We have that drive, and will use it to centralise issues of gender equality and inclusion in any assignment.

Responsive: we believe that each organisation and context is unique, therefore requires a unique response in terms of study design, process and presentation. We will work with you to get this right.

Inclusive: We believe that research processes must remain accountable to those whom your project sets out to serve, as well as to funders and programme decision-makers. Therefore we will strive to include rights-holder beneficiaries in our process, seeking out their opinions and perspectives, and building in opportunities for them to influence how we work.

Collaborative: We believe that engaging stakeholders in our process produces more accurate evidence and better results. We expect to engage your team to identify together what the key questions are and how they might be answered.

People @ evaluating for equality

kirsty milward

I am the director of Evaluating for Equality. I have over 20 years experience in international development at international, national and community levels.

Over the last 12 years, I have become increasingly engaged with evaluation, and particularly what it means to carry out gender responsive evaluation and research. I have also worked in various ways to support organisations in producing, analysing and presenting the gender responsive evidence and knowledge they generate. I have explored these interests through a number of assignments as an independent consultant, working variously as an individual researcher/evaluator or in teams brought together by clients or development service providers. I have worked with a range of organisations, from UN Agencies and bilateral organisations to both large international and small NGOs.

As director of Evaluating for Equality, I can build small teams drawn from a trusted network of development professionals with whom I have previously worked. Alternatively, I can join a team you are building. I am happy and competent in both team leader and team member roles.

Previously, I worked as a freelance editor and writer with leading academics and practitioners in Gender and Development. During this time, I was living in rural West Bengal, India, where, in a voluntary capacity, I founded and built a community organisation, Suchana Uttor Chandipur Community Society, which works to develop, model and promote education processes and practices responsive to indigenous Adivasi children. This included developing multilingual and multicultural ways of working and strong local leadership; alongside pioneering first language learning approaches for Santal and Kora children.

I graduated from Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, with an MA in Gender and Development in 1994.
